Parks News: Mine Train Reaches a Milestone; Starbucks Signage Arrives on Main Street

It’s time for the Frog Family’s weekly roundup of Disney and Orlando theme park tidbits from the interwebs.

We love comments! Drop us a line below if you have something to share.

This week’s highlights:

  • Seven Dwarfs Mine TrainWhile we’ll have to wait until 2104 to ride the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in New Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney imagineers have reached a milestone in its construction – completing the track! This family coaster will feature a train of vehicles that takes guests on a musical journey through the mine “where a million diamonds shine.” We’re looking forward to hearing even more details about it in the coming months!

  • Our how-to on Universal Orlando’s ride locker system unexpectedly generated some controversy on Facebook yesterday. We were a little surprised by the number of people who don’t like having to use the lockers to ride the coasters. What do you think of the system? Is there a better solution? Share your thoughts in comments.
  • Magic Kingdom is less than two weeks away from the opening of Starbucks at Main Street Bakery, and the Orlando Sentinel reports that the official signs have gone up. While we know redoing the bakery to accommodate the Seattle chain was a “hot” topic, we’re all for it. And by “we’re,” I really mean Mommy Frog, who is always hop-hop-hopping around the parks in search of her next caffeine fix :) .
  • A Pirate's AdventureA Pirate’s Adventure: Treasure of the Seven Seas, an interactive quest that takes Magic Kingdom guests through Adventureland in search of clues, has fully opened — along with its counterpart in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Wilderness Explorers. We expect the games to be popular, since we saw tons of guests playing the pirate game during soft launch on our recent visit for the Monstrous Summer All-Nighter.
  • Those of you who’ve always wanted to sleep like a Minion (haven’t we all?) will have your chance starting this fall! Universal’s Loews Portofino has created 18 new family suites that will be available Oct. 1 and will feature bomb-shaped beds and plenty of “Despicable Me” theming.
  • Just in time for summer, SeaWorld’s newest Aquatica opened this past week, bringing flamingos, turtles and even more fun to San Diego!

  • medalThose of you dutiful mothers, sons and daughters will be happy to know that the Disney Floral & Gifts Department have created some terrific gifts for Dad on Father’s Day. And don’t think you have to be visiting the parks to present Dad with the hero medal and certificate signed by none other than Mickey Mouse — you still have time to order them online (hint, hint)!
  • Car Masters WeekendThose of you visiting Disney World over Father’s Day can surprise Dad with a visit to Car Masters Weekend at Downtown Disney. This classic car show now in its third year will also include meet and greets with the “Cars” characters and a sock hop!

That’s all for this week. Until next week, happy planning!

    Hi everyone,

Just wanted to add a couple more thoughts about the lockers at Universal.

While they can be a little persnickety at times (which is part of the reason we wrote the post), generally we’ve found them to be pretty easy to use once you’ve got the hang of them.

Plus, the ride lockers are FREE!

2104? Wow…I hope all the future generations love the ride. Going to Disney on Saturday and getting excited….even if the Snow White and Seven Dwarfs coaster is 91 years from opening. ;-)
