Starting tomorrow, the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival begins at the Walt Disney World Resort and runs through Nov. 11. If you have the chance to go, have a blast! (Be sure to check out the world marketplace dishes Mommy Frog is most looking forward to trying at this year’s festival).
If you’re not going to be able to make it, why not have your own festival at home? Make up some of these simple and cute dishes, and every time you use them you can have your own little Disney party.
- Clear glass plates (these were just 99 cents each)
- Glass paint (craft stores sell paint specifically for glass surfaces)
- Vinyl and cutting machine (or if you don’t have one, get in contact with me and I will cut sets for you for a very small fee)
- Paint brush
- Piece of paper
Step 1: Trace the outline of the plate onto the paper and fold it in half, then half again. Open and repeat, rotating the folds so you have 8 even creases in the paper. Mark the ends with a marker and place the plate, upside down, over the paper. Now you have marks showing you 8 evenly spaced places around the edge of the plate where the shapes will be painted. Step 2: Cut 8 small Mickey head shapes from vinyl. Mine were 1 inch wide. Remove the head shape and cut the vinyl out around it so you have a small stencil. Place one at each of the marks around the plate. Remember to do this on the bottom of the plate. This way the plate will still be completely food safe when finished.
Step 3: Fill each of the shapes in with paint. On one plate I alternated red and black, then pink and purple on the other. I found that I had to put the paint on fairly thick for it to cover well. Then carefully pull up the stencil immediately. Once the paint dries it may peel up with the vinyl. Do this slowly and you will end up with pretty clean edges.
Step 4: Follow paint instructions for drying and curing. Probably a few days of air drying then baked in the oven. Step 5: Whip up a few of your favorite goodies, pop in your favorite Disney movie and make a night of it.
Don’t forget about these when you need gift ideas too. A plate full of goodies becomes extra special when there’s a personalized plate that goes along with it. So I hope you like the idea — be sure to leave any questions if you have them. And when you paint your own, share some pictures on our Facebook wall. We’d love to see them!
